Well, it turns out that this podcast is only mostly dead, and, as we all know, mostly dead means slightly alive! I'm actually incredibley excited that I now have clearance from Chapel Hill's Merge Records to podcast both their new releases and back catalog! A lot of my favorite bands are with Merge, and I never thought I'd ever have the opportunity to feature artists like The Magnetic Fields and Arcade Fire! Go to www.mergerecords.com to check out their complete roster, listen to free streaming music, and purchase CDs and downloads. Song 1: We Are The Men You'll Grow To Love Soon - Let's Wrestle (from In the Court of the Wrestling Let's) [MySpace] [Emusic] [iTunes] [Blog]

Aprilween (observed) was three days ago, and I have finally managed to overcome a vertiable Rube Goldberg machine of technical annoyances that was keeping me from getting this show finished. In grand Aprilween fashion, I have ten frightening tunes for your post-Tax day listening pleasure. I also muse about the future, if there is one, of the podcast. With shows coming so few and far between, is it time to face facts and call it a day, or should I let it evolve into something new? Any opinions? Let me know! I am still totally wiped out from back-to-back (and coast-to-coast) conventions. My one day at Dragon*Con was hectic, exhausting, and totally freakin' Airwolf! I spoke on two panels, performed Lance Biggs, purchased some awesome new games, and took a few pictures. Unfortunately, I missed out on the Parsec Awards (congratulations to all the winners!) and the already legendary live episode of Wingin' It. This was recorded on my iRiver, first in my hotel at PAX, and then back at home in NC during a thunder storm (we had the computers turned off), but I think there is something wrong with the iRiver because there is this annoying background noise. I'm really sorry about that, and it's quite embarassing, considering that I've only done one show with the new gear. Anyway... In this show, I report on my recent trip to Washington state to attend the Penny Arcade Expo--aka, PAX. I got to hang out with my friend Stuart, and it was a lot of fun, despite the crazy crowds. Highlights of the convention include: Watching Stuart compete in the D&D Open Duel (run by Technomancer Press) Song 1: Miskatonic Massacre - The Von Dooms (courtesy of Reanimator Records)Seeing the demo of Guitar Hero II Playing Arkham Horror and Runebound Meeting MC Frontalot and seeing him perform Song 2: Penny Arcade Theme - MC Frontalot (from Nerdcore Rising) I totally meant to get this posted days ago, but even though it's probably too late, look for me (and a ton of other Airwolf podcasters) at Dragon*Con! (Atlanta, GA, September 1-4, 2006) |

Based on Lancelot Biggs: Spaceman by Nelson Bond, adapted by Mur Lafferty, and edited by Paul Fischer and Martha Holloway (who also let me gank an entire episode of the Balticon Podcast so I could share it with all of you!). It was originally preformed live (pictured here) this past Spring at Balticon 40, but due to some unfortunate technical difficulties, we weren't able to record it with the proper sound effects. This performance of Lancelot Biggs: SPAAAACE MAAAAN!!!! is released under a Creative Commons 2.5 non-commerical, attribution license. I play Dick Todd, second mate of The Saturn. He's earnest, but not the sharpest tool in the shed. Most of the cast will be reuniting for an encore performance of Lance Biggs at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA during Labor Day weekend. Stay tuned for more details in upcoming editions of Random Signal. |

This podcast was recorded over the course of 5 days while on my recent vacation to the Gulf coast of Florida. Cut off from every last one of the internets, all I had was my trusty iRiver - so the sound quality is a little worse than normal. Also, it's long. Clocking in a just over an hour, this show is twice the usual length. You've been warned! Also, my wife Ryn makes her Random Signal debut. It's finally starting to feel like Fall around here, which means, of course, that pretty soon I won't have to worry about mowing my lawn for a few months!
The Duke University Podcasting Symposium went well, at least the small part of it that I was involved in did. I had a great time, and I hope they invite me again next year! I am starting to worry that this show is too eclectic to ever find a big audience. Too much geek? Not enough? I wonder... Oh well, let's talk about giant squids instead! And beer. In particular, the World Beer Festival in Durham, NC (this weekend) and the newly legal (in NC at least) high gravity beers. Hoorah for beer! Spoiler Alert!!! Beware my rambling look at Lost season two if you're not caught up with the show. And of course, there's a song... "Malthus, Thomas Robert (1809-1882)" by Artichoke |

Tonight I attended the reception for the Duke University Podcasting Symposium.
I'll be on the Triangle Podcasters panel tomorrow afternoon along with: Mur Lafferty - Geek Fu Action Grip Brian Russel - Audio Activism Dave Warner - Dave's Lounge Anne Bramley - EatFeed Michael Geoghegan of Reel Reviews (and Grape Radio) was also there, as was Dave Slusher of Evil Genius Chronicles. I'm afraid Mur and I might have bored Dave to death. Sorry Dave! For those of you who can't make the Symposium, it will be webcast live. I'm finally on iTunes! The best part is I never got around to submitting my feed. Yet there it is. (Maybe if I wait a little while longer, I'll magically have a logo.) Just one song tonight... Wed, 17 August 2005
So, I just found out that podcast 13 is still fucked up! It seems that by adding an intro onto the beginning, it dis-aligned all the recorded segments. The end result is that I'm talking over all the songs. Goddammit.
To any new listeners out there, please know that the show is usally better than this. I promise. Perhaps it's not too late to fix it. Again.

Third time's a charm!
I re-exported the original Audacity file (now with Exclusive Bonus Intro!), and, just like that, I'm golden. Or, at the very least, it doesn't suck anymore. Show notes are the same, so I left the orginal post as a text blog entry. It's just a little bit down the page... a little further... There it is.

The curse of Random Signal #13 continues!
Apparently, when I re-recorded my show Saturday night, I should have restarted my computer or something because Audacity seems to have been a wee bit over-taxed. The resulting podcast that went up was a pile (file?) of unlistenable shit. For anyone who has already downloaded show 13 and tried to listen to it, I'm very, VERY sorry. For anyone who hasn't got around to hearing it yet...DON'T DO IT! I will be recording a new show tonight, and, most importatnly, I will preview it before I post it. Again, sorry.

I'm going to be on a podcasting panel at Dragon*Con with Mur from Geek Fu Action Grip and Steve Eley from Escape Pod! It's even possible that Michael Stackpole from The Secrets podcast, and Michael and Evo from The Dragon Page will be there too.
I go on for a bit about celebrities I've seen while at work. (Unfortunately I haven't yet been able to locate my promotional Forest of Love perfume, but I know it's around here somewhere!) -"Doing Your Dishes" - Tad Dreis Shout out to Seth from WHYME -"Back Spasm" - Seth - third son of Albert I failed miserably to get Audacity to play nicely with the two voice mails I wanted to include. If anyone out there has any advice, I'm all ears. Chapel Hill, North Carolina gets the show cranked up all the way to eleven!
Apologies for the mysterious background static during the talky parts. I didn't do anything differently during editing, so the only possible explaination is that Audacity decided it doesn't like my microphone. That must be it. After some lame excuses for not podcasting more frequently, I get right into some local music. 1. Good For You - Tad Dreis (www.taddreis.com) 2.
